The right of access meets one of Europe's strongest picking cultures here, but reserves, fire risk and protected species still set the limits.

Traditions

Picking mushrooms and berries is a strong part of Dzūkija’s identity; Varėna holds a large mushroom festival.

Cuisine

Mushrooms dried, salted and pickled; soups, stuffings, dishes with potatoes and buckwheat.

Lithuania is a lowland country in which pine forests, mixed woodland, wetlands and sandy soils create extensive fungal habitats. In Dzūkija the forest remains part of the household economy and of the region's identity. The official Lithuania Travel portal describes picking mushrooms and berries as a living practice rather than a reconstruction of folklore. The most dependable season usually falls in late summer and autumn, but rainfall and soil temperature matter more than the date.

The law on wild plants and fungi in force, together with the environment minister's procedure, governs the use of these resources. There is no simple permission covering every part of the country. You have to check the status of the forest, protected areas, marked restrictions and temporary decisions arising, for example, from a high fire risk. Protected species must not be taken, and mycelium and habitat must not be destroyed. The legal profile was checked on 30 July 2026 on the official e-Seimas portal.

In the kitchen, dried boletes, salted and pickled mushrooms, soups and fillings for dumplings are particularly important. Dzūkija combines them with buckwheat, potatoes and produce stored for winter. The festival in Varėna shows the public side of the tradition, but competing over the size of a haul should not be a model for everyday use of a small site.

The practical rule is simple: before entering, open the manager's current notice, and on site read the signs in full. Freedom to pick does not mean freedom to drive in, to light a fire or to cross a closed zone. Only species you are sure of are taken, in an airy container and in a quantity that can be processed quickly.

A custom can be measured; the rules must be checked

Lithuania's Ministry of Environment reported in 2025 that 42–45% of households regularly gather forest products and that an average household collects about 34 kilograms of berries, mushrooms, nuts and herbs annually. Their national value was estimated at roughly €110 million a year. Picking is therefore part of the non-timber forest economy, not only a symbol of Dzūkija. Access still depends on the exact place. Current rules exclude strict reserves and places where protected-area regulations or a temporary authority decision prohibit use. Visitors must not enter parcels where logging or forest-protection treatments are under way. Access may also be temporarily restricted during high wildfire danger. A responsible trip requires a same-day check of rules, closures and fire notices.
