Countries
Germany: a small amount, no universal limit
Federal law uses a flexible personal-need threshold; species rules, individual states, owners and protected areas can all narrow it further.
Season
Peak: September · season from July to November
Late summer and autumn, with local spring morels; drought and altitude shift the season strongly.
Climate
From a maritime climate in the north to continental and alpine in the south; forests and timings vary widely.
Rules on picking
§39 BNatSchG allows small quantities to be picked carefully for personal use where it is not banned. Protected species, the owner, the federal state and the protected area may impose further restrictions.
Checked: 29 August 2026 · source · Rules change — confirm them with the local forest authority before you travel.
Traditions
Picking is popular regionally, and Pilzberatung advice centres support education, though availability differs locally.
Cuisine
Pfifferlinge, Steinpilze and Morcheln in sauces, with eggs, dumplings and game.
Germany takes in the northern coasts, the lowlands, the forests of the central ranges and the Alps. The Black Forest, the Bavarian Forest, the Harz mountains and smaller urban woods differ in their tree stands, rainfall and regulations. In many regions the main season falls in late summer and autumn, but altitude and drought shift fruiting. The name of the country is therefore not a calendar for a particular site.
Section 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act allows wild-growing mushrooms to be gathered carefully, in small quantities for personal use, from places where there is no prohibition. The act does not establish a single Germany-wide limit in kilograms. Regional figures often quoted are practice, or an explanation from a local authority, not automatically a federal rule for every forest. Commercial picking requires a separate check and may need consent.
The Federal Species Protection Ordinance lists, among others, the penny bun, chanterelles, birch boletes, morels, the saffron milkcap and the cauliflower fungus as exceptions permitting small quantities for personal need despite group protection. This does not remove local prohibitions, the strict protection of other species, or the rights of owners and land managers. In national parks picking may be restricted or excluded.
Regional cooking uses Pfifferlinge, Steinpilze and Morcheln in sauces, with eggs, dumplings and game. The legal profile was checked on 30 July 2026 on the official federal portal. Before picking you have to check the federal state, the municipality, the park and the signage on the ground. "A small amount" is an encouragement to moderation, not an invitation to negotiate the largest possible basket.
Why the statute contains no single kilogram figure
Section 39 of Germany's Federal Nature Conservation Act uses qualitative tests: where entry is not prohibited, a person may carefully take a “small quantity” of mushrooms for personal needs. It sets no nationwide kilogram figure. Commercial removal requires permission from the competent authority, which assesses effects on the local population and natural balance. The Species Protection Ordinance names porcini, native chanterelles, Gomphus clavatus, weeping milkcap, Leccinum species and morels among fungi whose protection exception covers only small quantities for personal need. A one- or two-kilogram rule may reflect a local authority's interpretation, but should not be presented as a uniform federal limit. The accurate formulation combines purpose, quantity, place and species.
