Latvia: a basket in the state forest
Latvian law regulates mushroom picking in the forest directly, but private owners and nature conservation still set the boundaries.
Season
Peak: September · season from July to October
The peak usually falls in August and September, though drought can shorten the season sharply.
Climate
A temperate climate under the influence of the Baltic Sea; pine forest, mixed woodland, river valleys and peat bogs make for varied habitats.
Rules on picking
In state and municipal forests the law allows anyone to pick wild berries, fruit, nuts and mushrooms unless other rules provide otherwise. In a private forest the owner’s rules and any marked restrictions apply.

Traditions
Picking forest mushrooms and berries is widely practised, and seasonal preserves remain part of the household larder.
Cuisine
Sauces, soups, stuffings, pickled and salted mushrooms; the kitchen pairs them with potatoes, cream and rye bread.
Latvia lies in a cool temperate climate zone, with a clear influence from the Baltic. Sandy pine forests, mixed woodland, river valleys and peat bogs create habitats for very different assemblages of fungi. The season begins in summer, but its most predictable part falls in August, September and early October. After warm rain, boletes, chanterelles and milkcaps appear; in a dry year even a known site can stay empty for a long time.
Section 16 of the Latvian Forest Law provides that wild berries, fruit, nuts and mushrooms may be picked according to the owner's rules. In state and municipal forests that right belongs to everyone, unless other provisions introduce a restriction. The owner of a private forest may restrict access, and a picker has to respect signage, protection zones and fire bans. A provision on access does not give a right to damage infrastructure, rut the roads, or carry out commercial activity without checking the separate requirements.
Mushrooms have a strong presence in Latvian seasonal cooking. They go into sauces, soups, fillings and preserves, often alongside berries and rye products. Official tourist materials present picking as part of contact with the forest, but without suggesting that every fruiting body belongs in the kitchen. The safest practice is one certain species to begin with, an airy basket, and checking whole fruiting bodies after returning. The legal position of this profile was checked on 30 July 2026.
The right follows forest type and visible notice
Section 16 of Latvia's Law on Forests classifies wild berries, fruit, nuts, mushrooms and medicinal plants as material non-wood forest values. Everyone may gather them in state or local-government forests, subject to access and conservation rules. On other forest land, gathering is allowed unless the owner or lawful possessor imposes a restriction. A restricted area must be marked with visible warning notices. A municipality may also limit entry on the recommendation of forest or nature-protection authorities for wildfire, protected areas, plants or animals. Freedom to gather is not freedom to drive: vehicles are confined to roads and natural carriageways, and visitors must not damage soil, infrastructure or nature.
