Slovenia: two kilograms is not the whole rule
The official rules give a specific daily limit, the way mushrooms must be carried, and a ban on tools that damage the mycelium.
Season
Peak: September · season from June to November
On the plateaus and in the mountains the timing depends on altitude; the main season runs from summer into autumn.
Climate
Where the Alps, the Karst, the Pannonian plain and Mediterranean influence meet; wide variation in altitude and humidity.
Rules on picking
For personal use the limit is 2 kg of mushrooms a day; protected species and tools that damage the site are banned, and mushrooms must be cleaned on the spot and carried in a rigid, ventilated container.

Traditions
Gobarjenje is a widespread practice, supported by clubs, exhibitions and family knowledge.
Cuisine
Soups, eggs, grains and meat dishes with boletes, chanterelles and other seasonal mushrooms.
Slovenia lies where the Alps, the Karst, the Pannonian Plain and Mediterranean influences meet. Within a small area there are damp beech woods, fir and beech forests, high spruce plateaus and the warmer habitats of the south. The season begins at different altitudes at different times; the main window for popular species usually runs from late summer into autumn.
The government's "Skrbno z gozdom" page states that a person may pick at most two kilograms of mushrooms per day for personal use. A mushroom heavier than two kilograms may constitute an additional single specimen. The use of tools that damage the site or the mycelium is prohibited. A fruiting body should retain the characters needed for identification, be roughly cleaned at the site, and be carried in a rigid, airy container. Protected species must not be picked.
The national limit does not override the rules of a protected area. Triglav National Park, reserves, residents' privacy and temporary closures may set stricter boundaries. Pokljuka is at once a popular recreation area, a commercial forest and part of the park, which is why the sign on a particular route matters in practice.
In Slovenian cooking mushrooms appear in soups and in dishes with grain, eggs, game and cream. Picking has a strong presence in the culture, but two kilograms is a maximum, not a target. This profile was checked on 30 July 2026. Before travelling, check the official notices, fire risk, weather and protection zone again.
The kilogram limit is only the first layer
Slovenia's rules separate access, purpose and forest condition. A forest owner is generally required to permit recreational collecting by others, while the daily personal-use limit is two kilograms per person. That does not create a right to enter in every circumstance. Collecting may be restricted where it threatens a species or forest function. In woodland managed specifically for fruit, the local authority may prohibit collection by others at the owner's request. Government guidance also identifies concrete hazards: visitors should not enter during strong winds, glaze ice or wet snowfall, and felling sites or extraction tracks with active machinery can be deadly. Two kilograms answers only “how much”; protection, signs and operations answer whether collection is lawful and safe.
