What this number actually says
46,089 is the number of observation records held in MykoRadar's database on 29 July 2026. A record means a documented report of an organism at a place and time, not one unique fungus. The same species may have thousands of observations, the same area may be visited many times, and a single mycelium may produce many photographed fruiting bodies in different years.
The data comes from open sources and from user reports, so its distribution reflects both nature and the activity of observers. A large number of points near a city may mean easy access rather than exceptional abundance. The absence of a point does not prove a species is absent. The map is also shaped by season, weather, the popularity of a taxon, camera quality and willingness to share a location.
The counter does not by itself say how many identifications are certain. Records differ in documentation and in level of verification; a scientific analysis should filter them according to the question. A photograph may be enough for a distinctive species, but it will not show spores, smell or characters hidden at the base of the stipe. Sensitive sites may have deliberately reduced coordinate precision.
The value is a snapshot, not a real-time counter. Keeping the date allows growth to be measured later without rewriting history. Sensible complementary indicators are the number of species with at least one observation, the share of verified records, regional coverage and distribution over time. The total alone shows the scale of the resource well, but only these breakdowns speak to its usefulness. Every point is the beginning of a question about data, not automatic evidence of a population trend.
