What was actually found

Six names came out of a single study, but that does not mean six spectacular fruiting bodies were found. Sporothrix cavum, S. cracoviensis, S. cryptarchum, S. fraxini, S. resoviensis and S. undulata were isolated from microhabitats associated with Polish broadleaf trees. The material came, among other places, from beetle galleries in bark and wood, from tree wounds and from hollows used by woodpeckers. These are fungi whose presence is revealed by culture and microscopy, not by a forager's basket.

The authors did not base the descriptions on the place of finding alone. They compared the shape and dimensions of structures in culture and the sequences of several DNA regions, and then placed the isolates in a phylogenetic analysis of the genus. A new species should form a recognisable lineage and have a set of characters allowing it to be distinguished from its closest relatives. Holotypes and living cultures were deposited so that other researchers can return to the material.

The names record part of the history of the discovery. Cracoviensis refers to Kraków, resoviensis to Rzeszów, and fraxini to ash. Other epithets indicate a character or a concealed way of life. Etymology does not, however, define the full range or a single host. A species named after its first site may later be found in another region and on another tree; the name remains a stable reference, not a prediction of ecology.

The 2021 paper increased the number of Sporothrix species then known from Poland and showed how poorly studied ordinary broadleaf tree ecosystems are. Part of the genus is associated with diseases of humans and animals, but that property must not be transferred to every new taxon. The study concerns systematics and associations with wood; it presents no evidence that the six species described pose a clinical threat.

The most important result is methodological. "New to science" need not mean an organism that is rare or newly arisen. It means that the available material, the comparisons and the rules of nomenclature justified a separate name. The fungi probably lived in these habitats earlier but remained attached to other names, or undetected. Further sampling will show their true range, hosts and role in the relationship between trees and insects. Every subsequent site should be tied to a preserved isolate or to a sequence comparable with the type.

What the paper establishes

The paper covers six names, not only the taxon shown in the “scientific name” field: Sporothrix cavum, S. cracoviensis, S. cryptarchum, S. fraxini, S. resoviensis and S. undulata. Isolates came from tree wounds, woodpecker cavities and material associated with bark, ambrosia and sap beetles in Polish hardwood ecosystems. All grew optimally at 25°C, but culture characters alone did not establish species limits: the authors combined morphology with ITS and the β-tubulin, calmodulin and TEF1-α loci. ITS could not separate two pairs of taxa; protein-coding markers were required. That is an important limit for metabarcoding-based identifications. None has an IUCN assessment, and an isolation locality is not a range map. Membership of a genus that includes pathogens does not demonstrate pathogenicity in these environmental taxa.
