Pleurotus sinensis: a new species among pinkish oyster mushrooms

A 2025 description separates some Chinese oyster mushrooms from the Pleurotus djamor complex. Fruiting bodies, microscopic characters and several DNA markers together support the distinction.

What was actually found

A familiar appearance with a different species boundary

Pleurotus sinensis was formally described by L. Zeng, Y.F. Sun and B.K. Cui in a team paper published on 10 December 2025. This wood-associated oyster mushroom can have white, pinkish-buff or flesh-pink caps when young, becoming yellow with age. Its fan-shaped, spoon-shaped or petal-like outline resembles other members of the genus, so general appearance alone did not settle the name.

The MycoKeys paper addresses species boundaries across the P. djamor complex. Material deposited under a single name in a sequence database can represent several distinct lineages. A revision therefore needs to return to specimens, rather than treating every label attached to a sequence as a verified identification.

A specimen that can be examined again

Holotype Cui 23439 was collected on 3 July 2024 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. It is held in the BJFC herbarium at Beijing Forestry University. The authors also examined collections from Guangdong, Guizhou, Sichuan and another locality in Liaoning. The name consequently rests on more than a single photograph submitted to an identification application.

The voucher number, repository and associated sequences allow later researchers to reassess the identification. A holotype anchors a name; it does not establish that its collection locality is the centre of the species' distribution. The epithet sinensis refers to China, but does not automatically mean that the fungus occurs exclusively within that country.

What the researchers compared

The team combined cap, gill, spore and hyphal characters with ITS, tef1α and rpb2 sequence analyses. Additional loci matter when outwardly similar fungi are difficult to distinguish using a single DNA region. In this study the Chinese material formed a separate group supported by morphological differences as well.

The authors also identified lineages from other parts of the world that require additional collections. Not every branch in a phylogenetic tree received a new name. This distinction matters: finding divergence in data starts a taxonomic investigation, while a formal description requires suitable material and a diagnosis.

How to use the account in the field

The documented habitat includes angiosperm trees and dead, decaying wood in temperate and subtropical parts of China. This account does not add Polish records or an edibility classification. Being related to cultivated oyster mushrooms is not evidence from a food-safety study.

The photographs in the original description document particular specimens; they are not a standalone identification key. When comparing a similar collection, retain information about substrate, locality and changes as the fruiting bodies age. A combination of characters and material available for further examination is needed to test whether a visual resemblance corresponds to the same scientific name.
