What this number actually says

72.9 per cent means that 1,494 of 2,050 species pages had at least one observation assigned to them in the database on 29 July 2026. The indicator measures the coverage of the catalogue by field data, not the share of species present in Poland. A taxon without a record may occur in the country but be awaiting import or verification; a page with one record does not prove a wide range.

The "at least one" threshold is deliberately simple. It makes it possible to find empty areas of the atlas, but it does not distinguish a species documented once from a common taxon with thousands of points. Nor does it take into account the quality of photographs, the level of identification, the age of the data or geographical evenness. An increase in the percentage is therefore beneficial only when the observations meet the documentation rules.

The remaining 556 pages form a concrete queue of work. Some may require obtaining data from reliable open datasets, some targeted field observation, and some a check of whether the page represents an outdated name. Users should not be encouraged into unsafe picking or into revealing protected sites merely to raise the percentage. An absent point is sometimes also the correct outcome of a careful privacy policy.

The indicator will be recalculated as a dated snapshot. When the denominator changes — for example after pages are added or merged — the percentage may fall despite a growth in observations. The counter 1,494/2,050, the date and the definition should therefore always be shown together. That makes the value legible: three quarters of the catalogue has at least a minimal anchoring in the field, but full coverage requires more well-verified records, not simply driving a bar to a hundred per cent.

Database coverage, not a map of absence

Of 1,901 species in the catalogue, 1,395 had an occurrence_count greater than zero on 29 August 2026. That is 73.38%; the other 506 had no linked observation. Both figures came from the same query, so the denominator does not mix different catalogue versions.

No observation does not mean that a species is absent from Poland. It can reflect a missing import, low detectability, seasonality, identification difficulty or uneven observer attention. The value measures coverage of MykoRadar’s own catalogue by occurrence evidence, not biological range or frequency.
