What this number actually says

A query to the public GBIF API made on 15 August 2026 for taxon key 5 — the kingdom Fungi in the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy — with the country filter set to Poland returned 447,408 occurrence records. The limit=0 parameter makes the server report the count alone, without downloading any data. For comparison, the same query without the country filter returned 60,444,051 records that day, so Poland accounts for about 0.74 per cent of the global holding.

An occurrence record is a documented link between an organism, a place and usually a time. It may come from a herbarium specimen, a field observation, an environmental sequence or a citizen-science project. One record does not mean one individual or one species: the same specimen may be updated repeatedly, and intensively studied sites contribute disproportionately many entries.

The number describes the availability of data, not the abundance of fungi in Poland. The holding reflects where somebody did research, digitised a collection and published the result — the history of institutions rather than the distribution of mycelium. The change comes from publishing, corrections and dataset synchronisation; it does not show that more fungi appeared in Poland in two weeks. Preserved specimens dominate at 256,885 records, so the data geography also reflects herbarium history and digitisation. Every count remains meaningful only with its date and query parameters.
