Why this place matters

This is an institution most of Europe does not have, and one that has run in Poland for so long that it stopped attracting notice. The Regional Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Bydgoszcz, together with eighteen district stations across the province, provides free mushroom advice. A picker brings in the day's haul and a certified mushroom expert or classifier says what in the basket is edible, what is inedible and what is poisonous.

Advice is given Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 13:00. The regional station sits at Kujawska 4 in Bydgoszcz, and the district stations are spread across the region, so the nearest point is rarely a long drive away.

The conditions of acceptance are specific, and they follow from how fungi are identified in the first place. Only fresh, whole fruit bodies are assessed, lifted out of the substrate together with the base of the stipe — because part of the decisive evidence sits exactly there, including the volva of an Amanita. The station will not assess mushrooms that are old, too young, cleaned, mouldy, cooked, frozen, fried, washed or pickled. The features cannot be read once the picker has removed them.

The service is addressed to private individuals collecting for their own consumption, and identification follows the regulations on fungi permitted for trade. It is therefore not a certificate and not a commercial document, but an answer to a single question: can what you brought in be eaten.

The station also repeats the rules that save more lives than any single expert opinion: pick only species you know well, leave very young or collapsing fruit bodies alone, never taste a mushroom to identify it, and carry the picking in an airy basket rather than a plastic bag, in which it begins to spoil on the way home.

How to prepare a collection for a safer assessment

The Bydgoszcz regional sanitary authority directs residents to a network of county consultations—the regional page lists 18 stations—but local expert availability and hours must be confirmed. Bring whole, fresh fruit bodies with the stem base intact, separated in breathable containers and accompanied by habitat information. Cut, cooked, dried, mouldy or mixed material may no longer support a reliable identification. A sanitary consultation is not a commercial valuation service or a medical diagnosis. After eating a suspect mushroom, do not wait for normal consultation hours: seek urgent medical assistance and retain leftovers of the dish or fungi for identification.
