The Polish Mycological Society

The Polish Mycological Society is a scientific association, not an office that identifies every specimen sent to it by post. Its statutory aim is to develop and disseminate knowledge of fungi, to support research, to bring together people from different branches of mycology, and to provide specialist opinions. The society creates a space where taxonomy, ecology, medicine, agriculture, industry and education meet.

The society also co-creates the Mykoteka at the Botanic Garden of the University of Warsaw, described as Poland's first centre of mycological education. Conferences and field trips likewise have their own participation rules, capacity limits and aims.

Mycotheca: a shared collection, not a valuation desk

The Polish Mycological Society is developing Mycotheca as a documentary collection at the University of Warsaw Botanic Garden. The project received, among other support, a PLN 106,700 grant, and its public reports and materials describe work on standards for accepting, describing and preserving vouchers. Three roles should be separated: the society connects and educates the community, Mycotheca preserves evidence, and expert assessment of an individual find requires the right process and data. Sending a photograph alone neither creates a reference voucher nor proves edibility. Current deposit rules, events and consultation options should be checked with PTMyk because they are not equivalent to the fixed opening hours of a public museum.
