Beatrix Potter is most often presented as the author and illustrator of children's books, but her early work on fungi was a systematic natural history project. She collected specimens, used the mycological literature, sought advice on identifications and made watercolours showing not only an attractive cap but the characters needed for recognition. The Linnean Society records that she produced more than 350 illustrations of fungi.
Potter was interested in development from spores. She grew material of various species on glass slides and observed it under the microscope. In 1897 she prepared the paper "On the germination of the spores of Agaricineae", focused among other things on the fungus known today as Flammulina velutipes. George Massee read the text at a meeting of the Linnean Society, since authors did not usually present their own work there.
The popular story says that the Society simply rejected the paper because a woman had written it. The archives show a more precise, though still unequal, picture. The paper was read and discussed, further work was then requested, and Potter withdrew it and did not submit a revised version. Women could not become fellows of the Society at that time, so she did not take part in science on equal terms. The absence of a surviving manuscript makes it impossible today to assess all her conclusions.
The most durable value lies in the observations and the illustrations. The accuracy of the watercolours made later identification possible, and the structures depicted documented what Potter actually saw. She should not be turned into the author of a modern theory of lichens — the Linnean Society corrects that myth too. Her history does show that illustration can be scientific data if it faithfully records the characters of a specimen, and how institutional barriers can cut short a promising line of research.
The watercolours also have value today as a historical record. They preserve the appearance of specimens from a particular time and place, though they do not replace herbarium material or a sequence. Set alongside letters and notes, they allow the process of identification to be reconstructed, along with the network of people who supplied Potter with specimens and critical comment.
Where the manuscript ends and reconstruction begins
The Linnean Society archive reconstructs the procedure, not the contents of Potter’s lost paper. Paper no. 2978 was read and discussed on 1 April 1897, withdrawn by Potter on 8 April and never resubmitted in amended form; the Society holds no copy. According to Roy Watling’s account cited by the Society, she selected Collybia velutipes, now Flammulina velutipes, from roughly 50 species she had studied. The V&A holds illustrations of germinating spores, while the Armitt Museum preserves mycological drawings, including the image associated with that species. This creates an honest exhibition trail: minute-book entry, surviving illustration and correspondence can be shown as separate pieces of evidence. The absent manuscript must not be supplied with invented quotations or detailed conclusions. A nineteenth-century underlying work may be public domain while the museum’s scan or photograph still has its own rights and required credit.
