Beatrix Potter: when a watercolour becomes data
More than 350 fungal illustrations show Potter as an observer whose art, experiment and institutional barriers form a single story.
Beatrix Potter is so firmly attached to Peter Rabbit that her fungi are often presented as an unexpected footnote to a writer's biography. In fact they were an independent project for well over a decade. Potter collected specimens, sought advice on names, read the literature, made microscopic observations and produced more than 350 illustrations of fungi. She did not paint only "pretty fly agarics". She recorded the characters needed to compare a specimen: the shape of cap and stipe, the gills, colour changes, the substrate, stages of development, and details visible under magnification.
Natural history watercolour at the end of the nineteenth century was a research tool. Photography did not yet easily render subtle colours and fine structures, and colour printing was expensive. A good drawing could combine several viewpoints and select the diagnostic characters that a lens does not rank. At the same time an image remained an interpretation. Its reliability depended on whether the artist really saw the structure depicted, or filled it in according to expectation. Potter built credibility through repetition and close contact with the specimen.
Her interest did not stop at morphology. She grew spores on glass slides, watched germination and tried to understand the development of mycelium. In 1897 she prepared the text "On the germination of the spores of the Agaricineae". At a meeting of the Linnean Society on 1 April the paper was presented by George Massee of Kew. This was not a situation in which a finished article was simply rejected unread. The Society recorded the presentation and discussion, and the text was referred for further work; Potter later withdrew it. The manuscript has not survived, so a modern reader cannot honestly assess the full argument.
The popular version of this story says that "men laughed at a woman who was right". It has a true core of inequality, but it blurs the documents. Women could not then become fellows of the Linnean Society, and Potter did not take part in institutional science on equal terms. Her education was at home, access to laboratories and specialists depended on intermediaries, and an independent professional path was very narrow. It does not follow, however, that every one of her hypotheses was a breakthrough confirmed years later. The history becomes stronger when we distinguish exclusion from the legend of an infallible genius.
Potter is particularly often credited with the modern explanation of lichens as a symbiosis of fungus and alga. The Linnean Society warns against that simplification. The debate over the nature of lichens was already under way in Europe, and Potter's surviving notes do not allow her to be made the sole author of the theory. She may have been interested in the relationship between the components and have made valuable observations without establishing priority. It is a good example of how a biographical need for a hero can turn a complex history of ideas into one striking point.
The images themselves have survived better than the paper on spores. Some are held by the Armitt Museum and Library, and an extensive archive of the artist is kept by the Victoria and Albert Museum. The watercolours allow researchers to trace her methods, her network of contacts and her collecting seasons. If an illustration is inscribed with a date and a name, it becomes a historical record of occurrence, though it does not replace a herbarium specimen. The colour of the pigment, the paper and subsequent storage also change what a viewer sees today.
Potter carried the skill of observation between science and literature. In the children's books the animals are anthropomorphised, yet the plants, rocks and landscape remain surprisingly concrete. That does not prove the stories are natural history treatises. It does show the memory of an eye trained on proportion, texture and season. Publishing success gave her financial independence, and her purchase of land in the Lake District later led to the protection of the landscape through the transfer of farms to the National Trust.
Not all the illustrations have the same documentary status. Sometimes an inscription and correspondence make it possible to establish the specimen, the date and the person consulted on the identification; at other times only the image remains. A curator has to separate a name written in Potter's hand from a later catalogue description. Taxonomy changes too, so an old label may be a correct historical record even though the modern species carries a different name. A digital catalogue should preserve both levels rather than quietly replacing the past with a new label.
Comparing a watercolour with a herbarium sheet shows different kinds of evidence. An image preserves fresh colour, posture and characters that disappear on drying. A specimen preserves tissue that can be examined again microscopically, and sometimes sequenced. A note describes smell and surroundings. The best documentation combines these forms. Potter did not always have the full set, but her practice shows why modern observation should record more than one attractive shot.
How should her mycological watercolours be viewed? First as a document: check the inscription, the date, the scale, the view of the hymenophore and the stages placed side by side. Then as an artistic decision: the arrangement on the sheet, the light, the rendering of a moist surface. Finally as a trace of institutions that admitted only some participants to publication. None of these perspectives invalidates the others. An image can be beautiful, informative and entangled in the history of access to knowledge all at once.
Digital reproduction makes access easier but flattens scale and material. The paper, pencil corrections, the arrangement of several studies on one sheet and notes on the reverse may all be invisible. Research therefore begins with the catalogue and, for a detailed question, leads to a curatorial description or the original. Publishing an image online does not remove the need to state the collection, the number and the correct attribution.
Today's digital atlas works differently but has a similar problem of selection. A photograph without the underside of the cap may delight and still give no basis for identification. Automatic colour correction may remove a character. A description without a specimen or an observation number is hard to check. Potter's lesson is therefore not "a drawing is better than a photograph". It is: an illustration becomes data when it shows clearly what was observed, preserves the context, and allows others to return to the source.
What the archive says—and what the legend does not
The Linnean Society records that by 1896 Beatrix Potter was germinating spores on glass plates and had made more than 350 fungal illustrations. Her paper, “On the Germination of the Spores of the Agaricineae,” was assigned number 2978; George Massee presented it at the meeting of 1 April 1897, and Potter withdrew it on 8 April. The manuscript is not now held by the Society. This is more precise than the familiar claim that it was simply “rejected because she was a woman”: women could not become Fellows until 1905, but secretaries routinely read papers for absent authors. The Society also corrects the story that Potter independently anticipated the symbiotic theory of lichens—a mistranslated diary footnote reversed her actual view, which treated lichens as standalone organisms. Her watercolours remain valuable records of close morphological observation without needing an unsupported discovery narrative.
