Golden oyster escapes cultivation in North America
Pleurotus citrinopileatus escaped cultivation and spread across North America. Trees it had colonised held poorer and different fungal communities.
The golden oyster Pleurotus citrinopileatus attracts attention with its intensely yellow caps and the ease with which it can be grown. In North America, however, it has not remained solely a product from a cultivation kit. Field data and community observations show it spreading across more than twenty-five US states. A study published in Current Biology examines what happens to the community of native fungi when the newcomer colonises dead or weakened trees.
The scientists compared trees bearing golden oyster fruiting bodies with similar trees without them, analysing the DNA of fungi present in the wood. On colonised trees they detected fewer species, and the composition of the communities differed from control sites. That pattern is consistent with strong competition for wood: a fast-growing saprotroph may take space and resources before local species do. It does not mean, however, that exactly the same number of fungi disappears from every trunk.
Citizen science played a large part in mapping the expansion. The distinctive colour makes it easy to recognise in photographs, and scattered observations allow new areas to be detected faster than a single field team could. A record still requires checking, since similar species, a photograph without diagnostic characters, or a fruiting body discarded beside a house can distort the map of an established population. The strongest data combines photographic documentation, repeatable sites and research material.
The story shows the risk of popular home-cultivation kits. Spent substrate contains living mycelium and should not go into a forest, a park or an open compost heap in a region where the species is not native. The safest course is to follow local waste rules, secure the material and not scatter the contents. Responsibility also lies with sellers: information about origin and disposal should be part of the product, not small print after purchase.
The result concerns North America and does not prove an analogous invasion in Poland. Every yellow oyster mushroom found here should therefore not be removed, nor should anyone try to "eradicate" a site on their own. What is needed is correct identification, documentation and contact with researchers or the services dealing with alien species. The broader lesson is this: an edible and attractive fungus can become an invasive organism if trade carries it beyond its natural range and living mycelium escapes into the environment. Early warning is cheaper than later removal: an observation with a date, a place and a photograph of the whole cluster is worth more than an alarm without material by which the species can be verified. Responsible home cultivation ends only once all the living substrate has been safely disposed of.
