A textile of living mycelium knits itself back together

A team in China made sheets from living Cordyceps mycelium. The material regrows when wetted, can be coloured with engineered yeast and breaks down in soil in about 41 days.

Mycelium materials have been made for years, and usually in the same way: the mycelium colonises a substrate and is then dried or pressed. The result is a sheet resembling leather, except that it is dead. That removes everything mycelium is interesting for — its ability to grow, to respond to its surroundings and to repair itself.

A paper published in Science Advances by the team of Ke Li and Chao Zhong at the Chinese Academy of Sciences approaches the problem differently. Mycelium of Cordyceps militaris is formed as cohesive films by a low-energy process chosen so that the cells survive. The material stays metabolically active, and that changes the list of things it can do.

Three of them are described most fully. Given nutrients, the mycelium puts out aerial hyphae and renews its surface, which in practice means a tear can be grown shut: a few drops of water and a patch of fresh pellets are enough. The interior of the sheet accepts other microorganisms — coculture with pigment-producing yeast gives colour, and melanin-rich fungi add protection against ultraviolet light. Buried in soil, the material degrades almost completely in about 41 days.

That last property is an advantage and a limitation at once. Something that disappears underground in six weeks is not a candidate for a coat worn for ten years. The authors do not pretend otherwise — they speak of short-term and single-use applications, where what is left after the product matters more than how long it lasts. Packaging is a nearer use here than clothing.

The limits of the work are worth stating. This is a laboratory demonstration, not a manufacturing process. It carries no data on mechanical durability in use, on cost, or on how the material behaves at scales larger than a sheet. Nor is it known how long it stays alive outside culture conditions, or what happens to it in a wash.

For a reader of this site, though, the interesting part is not fashion. Mycelium is the only structure we know of that builds a large-scale material out of itself, grows at room temperature on organic waste and decomposes without residue. Every attempt to use it is a test of how well we understand how hyphae join and what keeps them alive outside a forest.

The species is not an arbitrary choice either. Cordyceps militaris is insect-killing, but it has also long been grown industrially on plant-based media, so the cultivation technology existed before anyone thought of a textile.

Prototype status — 29 August 2026

The article was published on 24 July 2026. The team formed laboratory sheets from living Cordyceps militaris mycelium while preserving metabolic activity. Given moisture and nutrients, the material produced renewed surface hyphae; pigment-producing yeast demonstrated patterning, while melanized Aspergillus niger demonstrated ultraviolet shielding. This is a functioning platform prototype, not a market-ready garment textile. Repeated washing, abrasion, long-term wear, mass production and a full environmental life-cycle balance have not yet been established. The reported decomposition time belongs to one soil-test setup, not a guarantee that every future product will reach the same end of life.
