What was actually found

The order Xylariales is among the largest and most varied within the ascomycetes. It contains wood-decaying fungi, endophytes and plant pathogens, and its most recognisable European representative is dead man's fingers — the black, finger-like fruiting bodies that grow from the stumps of broadleaved trees.

Zhiyuan Yao's team surveyed Xylariales fungi in south-western China and collected specimens in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. Morphological examination combined with phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tub2 sequence data showed that the specimens represent two previously undescribed species, introduced here as Minuticlypeus zunyiensis and Paravamsapriya yunnanensis.

The paper provides detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and phylogenetic trees that clearly delineate both taxa and show their affiliations with species already known.

The scale of this work relative to its visibility is worth noting. The fruiting bodies of such fungi are often under a millimetre across and grow on dead twigs that nobody collects. Finding them requires deliberately working through material under a lens, and settling their identity requires culture, DNA extraction and the sequencing of four loci.

The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau appears in descriptions of new fungal species remarkably often. Altitudinal variation, a humid subtropical climate and several strong mycological centres in the region all contribute. The last factor matters as much as the first two: diversity gets described where somebody is looking for it.

The scale of the backlog is worth recalling here. Nomenclatural registers list more than one hundred and fifty thousand described fungal species, while estimates speak of millions. Roughly two thousand names are added each year, so at the current rate closing that gap would take centuries.

That is the background against which a paper describing two species should be read. A single article does not change the proportions, but without a thousand such articles a year nothing changes at all. Taxonomy is a field where progress is measured as the sum of small, patient decisions.

What the paper establishes

Minuticlypeus zunyiensis and Paravamsapriya yunnanensis were found on dead culms of unidentified bamboo in Kuankuoshui Reserve, Guizhou at 1,366 m and Xishuangbanna Reserve, Yunnan at 1,190 m. Fruit-body, ascus and ascospore morphology with ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tub2 phylogeny separated both taxa from their closest relatives. Their sister relationships received 100/1 BS/PP support; holotypes are GMB7604 and GMB7613. Dead bamboo is the documented substrate, but it does not demonstrate strict host specialisation or activity inside a living plant. The genera's broader association with monocots still rests on relatively few species. Two type localities cannot establish endemism, complete distributions, quantitative roles in carbon cycling or conservation status.
