What was actually found
Ophiocordyceps gotrae was described from material collected in the Huanglian Mountain reserve in the Chinese province of Yunnan. The fruiting body grew from an adult ichneumon wasp, Gotra octocinctus, found in the litter on the forest floor at an altitude of about 1,306 metres. The specific name refers to the genus of the host. The authors registered the name in Fungal Names under the number FN 573143.
The most visible part of the infection is the clavate structures growing from the insect's body. Morphology alone was not enough to establish a species. The team described the size and structure of the stromata, perithecia, asci and spores, isolated a culture, and set sequences from several DNA markers against other members of the genus Ophiocordyceps. In phylogenetic analysis the material formed a distinct lineage, and the set of characters allowed it to be distinguished from its closest taxa.
The host has diagnostic significance here, but should not be treated as the only character. Insect-killing fungi may have a narrow host range, and correctly identifying the insect can be as difficult as identifying the fungus. A single find also says nothing about how often infection occurs, or whether the relationship affects the abundance of the wasp population. Further collections from different seasons and sites are needed.
The life cycle has not been reconstructed in full. Finding an adult insect with mature fungal structures shows the final stage, but does not say where infection occurred, how long the pathogen developed, or whether it earlier affected the host's behaviour. The popular story of "controlling an insect" cannot be transferred automatically from other Ophiocordyceps systems. Any such mechanism requires its own experiment.
The exact location of the type also matters for re-collecting. Altitude, litter and season help in searching for comparable material without treating a whole province as a uniform habitat. Yunnan has great altitudinal variation, so a single point does not define the limits of a range.
The publication is a taxonomic description, not news of a new threat to people or agriculture. The species documents poorly known diversity among insect parasites in the mountain forests of south-western China. The type specimen, the culture and the sequences together form a point of reference by which subsequent finds can be confirmed or rejected, instead of resting on a similar appearance.
What the paper establishes
Holotype HKAS 148940 was collected on 11 August 2024 in Huanglian Mountain, Yunnan, at 1,306 m. The stroma emerged laterally from the thorax of an adult Gotra octocinctus ichneumonid found in forest-floor litter. Fungal Names: FN 573143. The authors compared sexual and culture morphology and built a phylogeny from nrSSU, nrLSU, tef1-α, rpb1 and rpb2. This supports the name, but one infected insect cannot measure infection frequency or host range. The study did not reconstruct entry route, development time or behavioural effects. “Zombie-ant” mechanisms known from other Ophiocordyceps must not be transferred to this species without an experiment. A type point does not demonstrate endemism.
