What was actually found

Diversispora conica belongs to the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. It forms no cap; it lives in association with plant roots, and identification uses spores from the soil together with DNA sequences. The epithet conica refers to the conical shape described in the diagnosis. In the same paper the authors proposed the new genus Paracorymbiglomus and several new name combinations in the family Diversisporaceae.

The study combined spore morphology with molecular phylogeny. In arbuscular fungi, characters such as wall layers, colour, reactions to reagents and the manner of spore formation are important, but resemblance can mislead. A phylogenetic tree makes it possible to check whether a set of specimens forms a distinct lineage and how it relates to previously named genera. A new species and a change of genus are separate taxonomic decisions.

That distinction became significant after publication. Later corrections in 2025 and 2026 concerned the nomenclatural validity of names and of the combinations connected with Paracorymbiglomus. In nomenclature a small omission in a formal description can mean that a name was not effectively established, even where the biological data and the analysis remain valuable. A corrigendum repairs a naming act; it is not automatically a retraction of the whole paper, nor evidence that the organism does not exist.

The MykoRadar record therefore keeps the main publication as the source of the description of Diversispora conica, and shows both corrections in the bibliography as later additions concerning the paper's nomenclatural surroundings. A reader should not infer from a title alone that every original combination holds the same status today. The current spelling and authorship have to be checked in a nomenclatural database together with a date, particularly when a name is used in a further publication.

The biological significance remains broader than the order of names. Arbuscular mycorrhiza affects nutrient uptake by plants and the functioning of soil, but a new taxon is not automatically assigned an agronomic function. A description says above all how to distinguish a lineage and where to place it on the tree of relationships. Only cultivation, host studies and further sites will show its ecology. This is a good example of science in which a formal correction is a sign of self-checking, not an embarrassment to the discovery.

What the paper establishes

A major geographic correction is required: Diversispora conica did not come from Poland. Its spores came from single-species cultures established with rhizosphere soil and root fragments of Ammophila arenaria collected on a maritime dune by Voidokoilia beach, Peloponnese, Greece. The epithet conica refers not to the spore's overall shape, but to conical fragments of spore-wall layer four seen after crushing. Wall morphology, 45S rDNA and, where available, rpb1 support MB 858392. Two later corrigenda concerned valid publication of Paracorymbiglomus and its combinations; they did not invalidate D. conica. There is no IUCN assessment, and a single inoculum source cannot establish the fungus's full range or plant specificity.
