What was actually found
Botryobasidium massonianae was described from the dead wood of the pine Pinus massoniana in China. The fruiting body forms no cap: it spreads across the substrate as a thin, soft layer of cobwebby or membranous texture. Such corticioid fungi are easily overlooked in the field, and once dried their colours and consistency become even less distinct.
The authors examined the arrangement of the hyphae, the presence of clamp connections, the shape of the basidia and spores, and the character of the hymenium. The name massonianae refers to the pine species on whose wood the material was collected. Comparison with similar Botryobasidium required both microscopy and analysis of the ITS region and the large subunit of ribosomal DNA, nLSU. The dataset indicated a distinct lineage and allowed it to be separated from species with a similar pale crust.
The association with Pinus massoniana describes the known substrate, but need not indicate strict specialisation. In the taxonomy of wood-inhabiting fungi, many collections are needed to distinguish host preference from an accident of which wood was available. Further finds should document the tree species, the stage of decay, the position of the trunk and the moisture conditions.
Identification in the field is practically impossible without taking documentary material and using a microscope. Even an experienced observer can at best recognise a group of forms. For that reason photographs taken from above should not enter databases as certain B. massonianae. A sequence helps, but its result is reliable only when the comparative database holds correctly identified records linked to specimens.
Material on dead wood is worth photographing before collection, because drying changes the delicate surface. A field note should include the trunk diameter, the side of the wood and its contact with the ground. These apparently small details later allow the microclimates of finds to be compared.
Resupinate fungi carry out a large part of wood decay, though they are less noticeable than brackets. In breaking down the components of the cell wall they take part in the carbon cycle and create microhabitats for other organisms. The description of B. massonianae does not settle its full role or range, but it supplies a name, a type specimen and sequences by which environmental material can be connected to a real organism. That matters particularly in wood metabarcoding, where an anonymous sequence says little about a fungus's appearance and ecology.

On dead Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) wood in China, researchers found a thin, resupinate fruit body described as Botryobasidium massonianae. Identification did not rest on substrate alone: the diagnosis records fluffy pellicular basidiomata, a hypochnoid hymenophore, simple-septate generative hyphae, basidia bearing four to six sterigmata, and 6.3–9.2 × 2.8–3.9 µm basidiospores.
