Wallonia: a ten-litre bucket and the owner's consent

Wallonia measures a picking by volume rather than by mass, and it is the only case of its kind in this set. The permitted amount corresponds to the contents of a bucket with a volume of ten litres per person per day.

The choice of unit is not accidental and has one practical advantage over the kilogram. Volume is visible, mass is not. An inspector needs no scales and a picker needs no guess at what a full basket weighs — both are looking at the same vessel. At the same time a volume measure treats light species more leniently and heavy ones more strictly, which works out well for someone gathering chanterelles and less well for someone gathering ceps.

The second restriction concerns the time of day: collecting may take place only between sunrise and sunset. This is the same mechanism the Spanish Micocyl system uses — it cuts out collecting by torchlight and forces identification in daylight.

The third condition is the most important and the one guides most often omit. The owner's consent is required. In regional state forests that consent generally exists, but with an exception worth remembering: in the Sonian Forest mushroom picking is prohibited. In communal forests, meanwhile, picking may be reserved for residents of the commune.

That last arrangement is rare in Europe and says something about how Wallonia understands a communal wood. It is not public ground in the sense of being open to everyone on equal terms, but the shared property of a particular community — and then priority in taking its produce belongs to that community. A visitor may therefore lawfully enter, walk through and admire, and still have no right to collect in the same place.

A simple checklist follows for a traveller. Ten litres, in daylight only, and having checked beforehand whose wood it is and whether picking is reserved for residents. The limit itself is generous, but it is not what decides whether collecting may begin in a given wood at all.

Consent depends on the owner, and the Sonian Forest is an exception

Wallonia's environment administration gives general consent for recreational collection in state forests owned by the Region, but excludes the Sonian Forest, where mushroom picking is prohibited. In communal forests, collecting is sometimes reserved for residents, so check with the municipality or tourism office. Only after consent is established do common conditions apply: collection is limited to daylight, must be non-commercial, and for products other than flowers may fill no more than a ten-litre bucket per person per day. Protected species and nature reserves are excluded. Permission to gather does not authorise a motor vehicle on forest roads. “Ten litres” is a condition after permission, not a substitute for it.
