Dalsland: Sweden's right of access in practice
Forests and lakes near the Norwegian border teach allemansrätten best when the freedom to pick goes together with local regulations.
Dalsland lies in western Sweden, between Vänern and the Norwegian border. The landscape combines boreal and mixed forest, long lakes, rocky rises and small settlements. It is less famous than Lapland and well suited to an unhurried trip in the field. Fungi are one reason to go into the forest, but the region is dispersed, so without a chosen base most of a day can be spent in the car.
One clear destination is Tresticklan National Park, protecting an extensive area of forest with little modern management. Trails run between lakes and across rocky ridges. The park is not a "mushroom spot" in the sense of promising a harvest. It is a place for observing the structure of forest, dead wood, damp hollows and the species associated with different trees.
Sweden's allemansrätten gives broad access to nature, but it is not a right written as "I may do anything outside a fence". Naturvårdsverket explains that wild berries, mushrooms and unprotected flowers may be picked while keeping to the principle of "do not disturb, do not destroy". You do not enter land immediately beside a house, do not damage vegetation, do not litter, and you respect specific restrictions.
A national park, a reserve and private land may have additional rules. Before entering Tresticklan, check the park's current regulations, warnings and the state of the trails. A general right to pick does not permit going round a closure, taking a protected species or lighting a fire during a ban. The sign at the entrance is part of the right of access, not an optional suggestion for less experienced visitors.
The mushroom season is usually best from August into September, sometimes reaching early October. Western Sweden receives a good deal of rain, but local conditions differ quickly. Rocky, shallow ground can dry out despite rain, while a damp hollow may fruit for longer. Night frost and the length of the day become a constraint earlier than in Poland. A travel plan should leave a margin for weather.
Visit Sweden describes picking and organised "food safaris" as a way of getting to know the landscape. A guided trip helps in understanding local law and names, particularly if a participant wants to cook. Before booking, check the leader's qualifications, the language, the length, the difficulty, and whether the offer covers identification of wild fungi or is a general walk with a tasting. The marketing word "foraging" can mean very different programmes.
On a first day it is better to walk a waymarked section of Tresticklan with no culinary aim. Observing the trees, the dead wood and the moisture allows a map of habitats to form in your head. On a second day you can choose forest outside the most sensitive area, after confirming ownership and rules. That separation protects the park from pressure and reduces the haste that leads to careless collecting.
Identification begins with a complete fruiting body. In boletes, record the colour change on handling and cutting; in amanitas, the base of the stipe, the ring and the remains of the veils; in milkcaps, the colour of the milk and how it changes. These characters do not add up to an automatic decision about edibility. An app fed a photograph of a cap is a tool for forming a hypothesis, not a safety check.
Paper dividers are useful in a basket. One uncertain specimen kept for documentation should not crumble among edible species. Old, waterlogged and insect-damaged mushrooms stay in the forest. After returning, the material has to be gone through again in good light. If the accommodation gives no means of chilling and cooking, the trip should remain photographic.
The terrain of Tresticklan is rough in places despite modest altitude. Rock, roots, wetland and the absence of infrastructure beyond the entrance call for solid boots, an offline map, water, waterproof clothing and a torch. A phone may lose signal and charge. Your route and return time should be given to someone else. A lone picker leaving the trail has a smaller margin for error than in an urban wood.
Dalsland can be combined with a canoe or a bicycle, but it is not worth stacking activities without a plan. A basket in a canoe has to stay dry and cool, and stopping on a private shore is subject to rules on privacy. A bicycle limits the safe carrying of mushrooms. One day on the water and one day in the forest give a better experience than trying to pick at every chance inlet.
A base at Ed or Bengtsfors makes supplies, accommodation and a fallback plan easier. Trailheads often need a car, and local transport timetables can be sparse out of season. Download maps and check fuel stations before travelling. A distance in kilometres does not describe the quality of a minor road, nor the time needed after heavy rain.
The Swedish right of access works through reciprocity. An owner tolerates passage because the user leaves no trace, makes no noise near the house, closes the gate and does not damage crops. A picker benefits from abundance but does not strip a small site for sale. When a group or a commercial event appears, the impact and the responsibility differ from those of a single family; an organiser should agree the route and the rules.
This article's coordinates indicate the park, not an entrance suitable for every car. The current starting point, parking and availability of toilets have to be confirmed on the manager's site. Lake water requires treatment, and rubbish leaves with the visitor. Where infrastructure is minimal, each user is responsible for a greater share of their own safety, preparation and impact on a place.
Before travelling, check the Naturvårdsverket page on picking, the current regulations for the chosen protected area, fire warnings, the weather and access. On arrival it is always worth photographing the entrance board and keeping its full text for the rest of the trip. Dalsland then becomes a lesson not in unlimited access but in responsible freedom: you can enter a landscape closely, because you recognise the limits of the habitat, of the residents, and of your own competence.
Allemansrätten stops where site-specific regulations begin
Status on 29 August 2026: Naturvårdsverket allows moderate picking of unprotected wild mushrooms, but Dalsland is not one site with one rulebook. Each national park or reserve has its own regulations; read the chosen site page and entrance board. In autumn, the agency advises selecting another area when hunting is under way. The county page currently carries a water-shortage-risk notice, so visitors should not rely on finding usable water. Tresticklan illustrates the variation: fires and barbecues are prohibited, a camping stove is allowed, main routes cross ridges, wet hollows and boardwalks, and only the 180-metre approach from the main car park is adapted. Check fire bans, weather, coverage and transport. A right to pick never certifies edibility.
