Official mushroom control in Zurich

Switzerland solved the problem of mushroom poisoning differently from most of Europe: it made assessing the picking a municipal duty. In Zurich it is run by the city environmental and health protection department, and the inspection point stands in the Seebach district, at Eggbühlstrasse 21. The check costs nothing.

The hours are the most interesting part, because they show that somebody set them around a picker's actual day rather than around an office rota. In the 2026 season, which runs from 15 August to 29 November, the point receives visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 19:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 18:00 to 19:30. These are the hours after the walk out of the forest and before supper — precisely when a decision can still change anything.

There is a single requirement for what is brought in, and it is a sensible one: the mushrooms must be sorted by species and roughly cleaned. Sorting is not a courtesy to the inspector. When a dozen species lie mixed in one bag, fragments of one fruit body cling to another, and a verdict on a single specimen stops saying anything about the rest.

Switzerland has many points like the one in Zurich, and the register of them is kept by VAPKO, the national association of official mushroom control bodies. Its finder takes a town and a radius and returns each point with its address, hours and contact. For Zurich it gives the city environmental and health protection department and the number 044 412 50 40.

The city also recalls that where poisoning is suspected the round-the-clock emergency number Tox Info 145 gives free medical advice. The distinction is worth keeping in mind: mushroom control works before the meal, the emergency number after it.

The inspection has a season, a limit and specific rules

Zurich operates official mushroom inspection from 15 August to 29 November in 2026; exact daily hours should be checked on the city's page before visiting. Municipal rules prohibit collecting on the first through tenth day of every month and limit harvest to one kilogram per person per day. All collected mushrooms should be brought whole, unwashed and separated because the inspector must see stem bases and any dangerous admixture. Inspection addresses the safety of the current basket; it does not legalise collecting in a prohibited place.
