A Monday with a mycologist

The Prírodovedné múzeum, the natural history branch of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava, runs a free mushroom advice service in 2026. Its announcement invites visitors to have finds identified and discuss fungal diversity, characteristics and uses. Sessions take place on Mondays, excluding public holidays, from 15:00 to 17:00 in the third-floor Objavovňa. The published season runs from mid-May to mid-November.

A consultation can be useful even when dinner is not the question. You might want to understand which features distinguish similar specimens, or why a name in an old field guide differs from one used today. Choose a concrete question about your find and record the answer alongside its scientific name. A habitat description or a single photograph will not necessarily permit identification to species.

Two timetables in one building

Normal museum opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Monday advice is a separate service. Arriving for a consultation does not mean that all exhibitions are open, while buying an exhibition ticket on another day does not provide a mycological consultation. This distinction matters when planning a short stay in the city.

The museum stands at Vajanského nábrežie 2 beside the Danube. Its access information describes a side entrance that security opens for visitors requiring step-free access. Since the advice session falls outside the normal exhibition timetable, confirm the entrance arrangements and any assistance beforehand. Keep the context of your find

Our suggested preparation is straightforward: record the date, habitat and substrate, and keep a photograph of the fungus where it was found. Note what you could not establish as well. Distinguish the consultant's assessment from your own guesses. If an identification remains provisional, retain that qualification in your notebook. A consultation can become the beginning of better observation rather than simply a way to acquire a name.
