Miles Joseph Berkeley was born in 1803 and for most of his life combined the ministry of an Anglican clergyman with the study of fungi. He worked outside a large laboratory, relying on correspondence, specimens sent to him, his own microscope and a continually expanding collection. In nineteenth-century mycology that model was crucial: a researcher could not travel to every habitat, but a network of collectors brought him material from Britain and from colonial expeditions.
Berkeley described macroscopic and microscopic fungi and plant pathogens. He compared spores and tissues, published diagnoses and put names in order. He was one of the researchers who shifted attention from a catalogue of shapes towards questions about plant disease. The period has to be borne in mind: some organisms then called fungi were later moved to other lineages, and numerous names and species concepts were changed after analyses of types and DNA.
Berkeley's most material legacy is the collection. Kew states that in 1879 his private holding of about 30,000 specimens, including some six thousand types, began the institutional Fungarium. A nomenclatural type is not the "most typical" individual. It is the particular material to which a name is permanently attached. Because the specimens were preserved, later researchers can check original identifications and correct interpretations.
Berkeley also published books and articles popularising the recognition of British fungi. His work was not free of the limitations of the collecting system: metadata was often sparse, material from distant countries arrived without full context, and European authors were given formal priority over local knowledge. Modern fungaria try to repair those gaps through digitisation, data sharing and clear rules of access.
Berkeley's significance therefore rests not only on the number of taxa he described. He showed that mycology needs a comparable archive. A name in a publication may be forgotten or changed, but a well-preserved specimen allows a return to the source and the asking of the question again with new methods.
From a private herbarium to scientific infrastructure
The scale of Berkeley’s legacy becomes clear only beside the present Kew Fungarium. The institutional collection was founded in 1879 around roughly 30,000 of his specimens, including about 6,000 types—the name-bearing materials to which later researchers return when deciding what a published name means. Kew now holds more than 1.25 million dried specimens from around the world, and its data portal exposes records for about 1.1 million of them.
This is not simply the story of a “great collector.” A private holding became public, comparable evidence that can be re-identified, examined microscopically or sampled for new analyses. The profile should connect the scale change—30,000 → 1.25 million—with a clear explanation of a type. A random mushroom photograph cannot show Berkeley’s actual contribution; a specimen, label and present database record can.
