The Swedish day of the mushroom has a solution most similar initiatives lack: it needs no announcement of a date. The organiser states a rule and leaves it at that. The day always falls on the first Sunday in September, so in 2026 it lands on 6 September.

The simplicity of this arrangement has practical consequences. A local society does not have to wait for a decision from the centre before planning an exhibition, and a participant does not have to look up the date each year. The rule only has to be learned once.

The event has neither a single venue nor a single programme. Mushroom societies, nature conservation organisations and others put on exhibitions, field excursions and assorted activities across the country on that day. The format is therefore distributed: the day of the mushroom is not an event but a shared date around which dozens of independent organisers arrange their plans.

A mushroom exhibition as a genre deserves a few words, because it is far less common in Poland. It is put together in a day or two: a group of collectors brings fresh fruit bodies in from the surrounding area, specialists identify them and lay them out on tables with labels, usually grouped by genus or by edibility. A visitor sees several dozen or several hundred species in one place, most of which they would never find themselves.

The value of such an exhibition is twofold. For the public it is the one occasion to see an edible species and its poisonous lookalike side by side, both fresh and in the same condition. For the organisers it is a snapshot of one day in one district, saying something about what happens to be fruiting.

The date is not arbitrary. The first Sunday in September falls in Sweden at the start of the main season, when fruit bodies are already plentiful and the autumn rains have usually arrived. An earlier date would risk empty tables, a later one a collision with the peak of the season, when collectors would rather be in the forest than at an exhibition.

One date, many local events

SMF places “Svampens dag” on the first Sunday in September, which falls on 6 September in 2026. This is not one centrally ticketed festival. Mycological and conservation associations independently arrange exhibitions and excursions. One verified Norrköping listing gives a 10:00–13:30 meeting at the Sörsjön bathing-area car park, with about one hour collecting in groups followed by one to two hours sorting and identifying; participants should bring a basket or bag and packed lunch.
