Orchid conservation also begins with its fungi

Preserving seeds and a suitable-looking site may not be enough to restore an orchid population. Research shows why its fungal partners and their requirements also matter.

A plant does not return alone

The seeds of many orchids depend on suitable fungi during germination. Planting an orchid or sowing its seeds in an apparently similar forest therefore does not guarantee population recovery. The appropriate partners must be present, and their abundance and activity must support the plant's developmental stages.

Melissa McCormick and colleagues studied three North American terrestrial orchids, comparing germination with molecular detection and abundance of their fungi. Their work separates two ideas that are easily confused: detecting a fungus and establishing conditions that permit germination. A DNA record is not a complete assessment of habitat suitability.

Both partners need appropriate conditions

An earlier Smithsonian experiment reported in 2012 compared forests of different ages and fungal additions to seed plots. Germination success was associated with abundant appropriate partners. This was evidence from particular species and sites, not a universal minimum forest age.

SERC's research programme also considers light availability and different stages of the orchid life cycle. Conserving an interaction consequently needs more than one soil measurement. Shade, organic material and habitat history may affect a seed, an underground plant and a flowering individual differently.

Turning evidence into restoration

Useful documentation connects plant identity, fungal identification, material provenance and observed outcomes. A seed bank becomes more informative when researchers know which fungi and conditions permit its seeds to germinate. This does not recommend transferring arbitrary soil between sites, which can move unwanted organisms as well.

Orchids illustrate how the case for fungal conservation extends to the survival of other organisms. Preserving a mapped area is a starting point. Restoring the relationship requires the right partners, their habitat and evidence that the biological process actually works.
