After fire, fungi and plants do not recover at one pace
A 2026 Mojave study shows that heavy plant losses need not produce an equally strong decline in soil fungi. Responses depend on habitat and fire behaviour.
A burned landscape does not reveal the whole soil response
Following the 2020 Dome Fire, researchers monitored Mojave Desert plots from the first weeks to three years after the event. Arik Joukhajian and colleagues' 2026 paper compared plants with soil microorganisms. Despite major losses of Joshua trees and other vegetation, microbial communities showed substantial resistance and resilience. Belowground responses were not a simple copy of the damage visible aboveground.
The authors distinguish fire intensity from its ecological effects. A rapidly moving fire can kill vulnerable plants without heating soil in the same way as prolonged combustion of a thick fuel layer. That distinction helps explain this case, but cannot predict the outcome of every wildfire.
A desert is not a model for every forest
Dove and Hart's meta-analysis and a review of boreal root-associated fungi describe losses of diversity and changes in fungal communities. The findings need not conflict. They concern different hosts, soils, sampling depths and disturbance histories.
The appearance of fungi associated with burned substrates also does not establish recovery of the whole community. One conspicuous species may benefit while others have lost their substrate or plant partner. Detected richness, community composition and ecological function are separate properties.
What monitoring should retain
A useful record includes damage severity, moisture, sampled soil layer, time since the fire and surviving habitat patches. Repeated sampling is more informative than one visit: rapid turnover and long-term recovery can look similar at a single moment.
The conservation lesson concerns assessment, not a recommendation to burn habitat. Researchers need to establish what persisted and which interactions return. Resistance of some microorganisms over three years does not mean that long-lived plants, continuous deadwood supplies or an entire ecosystem have recovered.
